Discovering Cidade Velha: Submerged History and Marine Biodiversity
Discovering the Underwater Secrets of Cidade Velha, Cape Verde
Located on the historic and picturesque island of Santiago, Cidade Velha offers a diving destination that is both a testimony to rich maritime history and a vibrant sanctuary for marine life. This corner of Cape Verde is characterized by being less known in terms of underwater tourism, which has allowed its marine ecosystem to remain pristine and surprisingly diverse.
Location and History of Cidade Velha
Cidade Velha, situated on the African continent, is a small city on the coast of Cape Verde that was the first European colonial capital in the tropics. Originally known as Ribeira Grande, this city is rich in history, having been a hub during the age of discovery and transatlantic trade. The historical significance of Cidade Velha, coupled with its maritime activity, has resulted in numerous shipwrecks, many of which are remnants of its past as a strategic point on trade and military routes.
Climate and Diving Conditions
Thanks to pleasant temperatures all year round, ranging from 22°C to 29°C, diving is an activity that can be enjoyed in any season. These idyllic conditions are not only perfect for divers but are also ideal for the rich marine fauna that inhabits these waters.
A Window to Marine Biodiversity
This region is recognized as one of the world’s top ten marine biodiversity hotspots, serving as a vital crossroads for rare and endangered species. On every dive, it's common to encounter an incredible array of marine life — from vibrant coral reefs and colorful tropical fish to sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles. During the months of March to May, humpback whales visit these waters to mate, putting on breathtaking natural displays with their powerful breaches and graceful water acrobatics.

Submerged Treasures
The underwater history of Cidade Velha is as rich as it is on land. More than a hundred shipwrecks are scattered around Santiago, each telling a different story. From Spanish galleons to Dutch merchant ships, each wreck offers a time capsule for divers to explore. A notable example is the Tarrafal wreck, a challenge for divers due to its strong currents and reduced visibility.
